Everton - Team Guide for FM15

0
0

Introduction

Everton are a team admired by many; the ‘neutral’s team’ if you will. Famous for playing some great attractive football over the recent years. As years have gone on, they have always found themselves around and about the European spaces in the Premier League. However lately they look to trying to take their club to the next level. Such FM15 save will present you with an opportunity to do just that.

With the signing of Romelu Lukaku and young talents like Ross Barkley you have the ability to break into that decorative top four. The board will be hoping for you to one day bring Champions League football back to Goodison Park. With this guide I will be hoping to give some tips on how you can achieve such an achievement.

Finances & Budget

Everton are a club famous for how little they have spent over the years and how well previous managers have done, working with what they have. However this year the club splashed the cash and signed both Romelu Lukaku and Gareth Barry on permanent deals as well as signing Muhamed Besic. Because of this there isn’t going to be much to money left to spend.

If you team is challenging for Europa League you will receive £5 Million to play with, alongside a £1.17 million wage budget. If you are slightly more optimistic and aim at the Champions League you will have £6.25 million with a £1.27 wage budget. If you are extremely confident in your abilities as a the boss, you can aim for a tittle challenge and will you be greeted with a£6.75 million to spend and a £1.3 million wage budget.

If you are a manager that looks to do a lot of buying, you will have to strongly consider selling. However even if you decide to sell a number of your players, one thing you keep in mind is the clubs low transfer revenue that is made available. During my save as Everton over the years it has fluctuated and varied from 25% to 75% and right back up to 100%. Something defiantly worth keeping an eye on.

Strongest Tactics

4-4-1-1

The 4-4-1-1 formation has been very popular with Everton over the last few years, it offers the ability to compact your midfield and offer support to your lone striker at the same time. With an attacking midfielder behind your striker it offers players like Barkley or Naismith plenty of room to create chances. Two other positions that have been vital to Everton’s success is their wing backs. It gives you the chance to get them over lapping and exploiting their great crossing abilities.

4-2-3-1

The 4-2-3-1 is a very similar formation, however the main difference with this formation is it is slightly more attacking. For this formation you are looking to get the best out of your wingers, by putting them in more offensive positions. This will bring the best out of players like Mirallas or McGeady for example. It also creates space for wing backs to attack. The space that was left by the deeper wide midfield roles.

4-2-3-1 (DM)

This formation is very similar to the previous formation mentioned. This one offers you a more solidified midfield with the inclusion of a defensive midfielder as well as your two central midfielder. Because of this you sacrifice the attacking midfielder. This formation focuses on attacking movement and creativity.

It gives an opportunity and freedom to one of your central midfielders to get further forward as well as creating lots of space for your wingers to cut inside. If you choose to set your wingers as inside forwards this will create more room on the wings for your on rushing wing backs. You may find you get the best out of your wing backs in this formation.

First 11 Positional Analysis

Goalkeepers:
Your first choice, as he has been for many many years should be Tim Howard. The American goal keeper starts the season off the back of some very strong individual World Cup performances. Despite being 35, Howard is still going to be a very strong keeper for you, however you won’t be able to hide the fact he is ageing and a replacement should be high on your list of to do’s.

I say this because I do not believe his back up is going to be able to reach the same level. Joel Robles, signed from Wigan following Roberto Martinez to the club. The Spanish keeper will do a job for you as a backup, however if you are looking to take the club forward he will not be enough when Tim Howard eventually steps down.

Right Backs:
At the right back spot, Seamus Coleman will be your ideal choice. The pacey Irish defender has been a revelation at Everton over the years. He is always improving on the attacking and defending front. Apart from Coleman you only have the ageing club legend Tony Hibbert. Again he will do a job as a back up, but you should aim to buy a young right back straight away or de-fiantly after a season.

Central Defenders:
In the central defensive position you have a great mix of young and old. Firstly you have a great young talent in John Stones. Even at the age of 20, he has been tipped to be one of England’s greats. Despite his young age he is ready for the first team but ensure you manage him well to get the best out of him. To partner Stones you have good options, firstly in club captain Phil Jagielka. The 31 year old is a possible tutor for Stones, and he will learn quickly by playing besides him. The England international will add experience to your back line and can form a solid partnership with his fellow countryman.

If you chose to look else were, cast an eye to Silvan Distin. Despite being 36 he should still be in your plans for a short while. The Frenchman can add experience and consistency to your back line. This can also ease pressure off of players like John Stones. A replacement for Distin should not be far from your thoughts with the defender coming to the end of his career. Your fourth choice central defender is another that followed Roberto Martinez to the club. Antonio Alceraz, his time at Everton has been ridiculed with injury and from this he has failed to establish himself in the first team. Because of this I don’t see him remaining at Goodison Park for very long, selling the central defender could free up some funds for new players.

If you are short of funds, look no further than the Everton Under 21’s side. Their defense is full of exciting prospects. It would be worth keeping an eye on Tyias Browning. The 20 year old English central defender comes with a lot of potential.

Left Backs:
In the left back position, a man you may have to fight off interest for is Leighton Baines. The left back has been ever present for Everton over recent years. His ability to get forward is something you should look to exploit, and his incredible ability from dead ball situations. He will create chances at will for you and don’t be shocked when you see him grab a few goals either.

Behind Baines you have a solid back up in Bryan Oviedo. His game time has always been limited at Everton because of the consistency of Leighton Baines. Oviedo aswell starts the game recovering from his broken legs. You will have to manage Baines carefully for the first couple of months, or consider calling up youth players as cover. Young Luke Garbett could be one to watch. Lack of game time may frustrate Oviedo, rotation will be key to keeping both players happy.

Right Midfielders/Wingers:
The right hand side of midfield presents you with a tricky winger in Kevin Mirallas. A player that you may find hard to keep hold of, as he attracts interest from top European clubs. Valued at £19 million you could face a tough decision before a ball is even kicked. If you decide to keep him he will play a big part in your season. He will link up well with his fellow country man Romelu Lukaku and create lots of chances in the final third for your team.

If you do choose to cash in on Mirallas you still have a very strong winger in Aiden McGeady. The Irish winger, he will link up well with Coleman and provide a partnership that can torment defensive back lines. McGeady will provide consistency to your attacking trio, he may not set the world alight, but he will defiantly contribute.

Central Midfielders:
In the central midfield roles you have great defensive protection. You have the experienced Gareth Barry, whom proved himself during his season long loan at Goodison Park. Barry is still more than capable of playing a key role for you, in a holding midfield role he offers a lot of protection to your back four.

To partner Barry you have James McCarthy, one of the more established players of which that Martinez brought to Goodison Park from Wigan. He will be the midfielder that gets around the pitch and will not be afraid of putting a tackle in. He will compliment Barry very well, allowing your more attacking players to have more freedom in the final third.

If you’re casting an eye to the future of the club, look no further than Muhamed Besic. The 21 year old joined Everton over the summer and has the potential to grow into a dominate figure in your midfield. A tireless midfielder but also a very technical one. You should look to include Besic whenever you can. As a backup you have Darren Gibson, another that due to injuries he has soon become a fringe player at Goodison Park. Gibson isn’t likely to improve and probably won’t cut the bill at Everton. A lack of game time will frustrate, you could possibly look to sell Gibson, many lower Premier League sides will be keen.

Left Midfielders/Wingers:
Onto the left hand side of your midfield, you have a few good options. However this is another position were you may feel you could improve, if you have the funds available. Steven Pienaar is going to be a first choice in my opinion. Over the years Pienaar has linked up very well with Leighton Baines, he will continue to do so. Pienaar is at is best with the ball at his feet. Alongside Pienaar you also have a young talent in Christian Atsu on a season long loan from Chelsea. Atsu comes with potential to grow and should look to make the most of him whilst you have him at Goodison Park.

Attacking Midfielders:
This is a part of your team that you should pay a lot of attention to. In this position you have strength in depth, with a balance of young and experience. For many they will focus on Ross Barkley, rightly so. The young England attacking midfielder is one many are expecting to develop into a great midfielder. He can be influential in your sides for years to come. Behind Ross you have a possible tutor in Samuel Eto’o, joining the club on a free after his time at Chelsea. The former Champions League winner comes with bucket loads of experience. A great player to look to for a substitution or a great rotation option. Or you could also choose Steven Naismith. Naismith can play in behind or as a sole striker, his pace and work rate will be very helpful to your side and can be a tricky player for defenses to face. As well as these three you also have club legend Leon Osman, a versatile midfielder but primarily plays through the middle, whether that’s in an attacking role or as a deeper role.

Strikers:
For your striker there really is only one man for the job. The clubs record signing of Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian has been free scoring since his arrival to the Premier League and he is yet to reach his best. With lots of potential still to improve he has time on his hands. He can be a vital part to your Everton team. Behind Lukaku there is not much depth, as Everton usually only play with a lone striker. You have Arouna Kone, who starts the save injured, the Ivorian is another that will probably not cut it at top four level and could look to move on to free up some funds. Both Samuel Eto’o and Naismith can play as a striker if need be as well.

Weaknesses

You may have noticed throughout the squad, the word ageing was mentioned quite frequently. This is something you will need to address with Everton, not necessarily all at once. However as time goes on you may want to prioritize the youngsters at the club.

The transfer budget at the club is small. In order to get your hands on some cash you may need to sell. Unless you provide instant silverware in your first couple of seasons. Once you provide the club with some trophy they will provide you with the cash to improve. Remember to always keep an eye on your transfer revenue percentage as well. That could be the difference maker in your next transfer target.

I mentioned earlier about managing some of the finest young talent’s, which is a great experience as a manager. However it does come with some down points. Your players will attract interest from all over the Premier League and Europe. From the start of the save and for years to come. Players such as Coleman, Baines, Stones, Besic, Barkley and Lukaku in my experience have received bids from the top English clubs, and club’s such as Real Madrid and Barcelona.

This could very well provide you with a lot of cash to spend, but it depends where you want to take your side and who you want to keep or sell. Ultimately it comes down to you and what you want from your side.

*Highlight the areas where the team needs improving, and is weakest in, suggesting a player or two who could fill the gap in the side.*

Conclusion

Overall there are defiantly things that can be achieved at Everton. You have the chance to play with and develop some of the Premier League’s finest young talents. The squad on a whole is only one or two signings away from being a top four side. Providing you invest well in young players, Everton can make for a very enjoyable long term save. I hope from this guide you can take information that can help if your attempts at taking Everton from the not quite top four side to the next level. If this guide has helped you, let us know with a comment. Or if there's anything you would have done differently.

4-1-2-1-2 The First Love

Hi, this is my first article, so be kind with me. The origin of this tactic in my head comes from that Chelsea team with Makelele as a DM, and that later Mourinho used the same and he did won the Champions League.

With that in mind, and of course the fact that I wanted something else than possession, I ended up with this formation.

I tried to play the most simple football I could, which means, a solid defensive line, and when I got the ball pass it to the wingers, who crosses it in the box where I got three players waiting for it. The tricky part is setting up player roles. I got something for the Deep-Lying Forward role, so I use it everywhere... Based on this I'm using the classic set-up for a two forrward system, an AF with my DLF. I have to mention that I'm focusing enterily on the DLF. I'm training him as a target man, because that's what I want from him to collect he high ball and distribute or shoot them.

The most important player, I guess, it's the DM, who gets the ball from the defenders and distribute's it too the wingers, training him as a regista by the way. The wingers are the connection between the back and the front, so they have to be good at Crossing, Dribling have a good pace and Acceleration. I use a Shadow Striker because I don't want to use three central strikers...

The mentality I used is Attacking but you can change it to a counter attacking one if you play against stronger teams. The shape is a Fluid one, but you can change this as well, if you got more technical players, who have good mental attributes too you use a more fluid shape, if not you can change it too a flexible or rigid shape.

Instructions, I've tried to keep it as simple as I could. This is for two reasons; One: I'm trying to score a goal from at most 6-7 touches; and Two: because all time when I'm creating a new tactic I get myself in as much trouble as you can't imagine. :)

I played a few games on this save, but I used it on various teams, in different leagues and it worked all the time. Good Luck! :)

This tactic will allow you to dominate almost every game. I used it in my first year with Arsenal and it works perfectly. By using this tactic your team will have a good balance between defence and attack resulting in winning a lot of games with less goals against. The midfield and Wing backs are very important in this tactic.

My team instructions:

Close down more (to recover ball possession quickly and take advantage of defensive mistakes), Push Higher Up, Exploit the Middle (use your midfield as the creative motor of the team), Work Ball Into Box (remain patience to find the right moment for breakthroughs), Pass Into Space, Shorter Passing.

Roles Analysis

SK: Sweeper Keeper / Support (Sweeper Keeper Defence is also possible if your keeper is not that good in Rushing Out and has low Acceleration) - My keeper uses short passes to the Wing Backs to build up from the back.

CWB: Complete Wing Back - your wing backs need good pace, tackling, crossing and stamina skills. As mentioned earlier the wing backs are very important in this tactic, because they can create a lot of chances by moving forward and give crosses to your attackers. They also provide passing possibilities for your midfield. Furthermore they need acceptable defensive skills like tackling and marking to prevent wingers to become dangerous.

CD: Central Defenders / Defence - The central defencers main job is to keep the gates closed and pass the ball to your midfielders. Good passing skills are not necessarily because your CD's use easy short passing.

CDM: Anchor Man - The anchor man is the one who has to recover ball posession and pass the ball as quickly as possible to your creative midfielders.

CRM: Box to Box Midfielder - THis midfielder supports the anchor Man but also the playmakers. He is the link between defence and attack.

CLM and CAM are both Advanced Playmakers / attack - they have to create chances by putting the attackers in front of the goal keeper or give through balls towards your wing backs.

SP: Advanced Forward - This attacker needs to be very quick and good with pace, acceleration, finishing and dribbling skills.

SP: Target man / attack - This attacker needs to be strong and a good header. (It is also possible to use a Complete forward or Deep Lying Forward in this possition, depending on the skills of your attackers).

This tactic despite making my team score more goals, it is also keeping the goals conceded at minimum. For training put your team to rest before and after every game; use balanced and intensity too high.

This is my tactic I used with Chelsea and went 80 games unbeaten.
Once the players get used to this tactic your team will be unstoppable.

This tactic is the best I have used in this FM 2015. With this tactic you'll be able to generate a big number of chances and fairly good possession.

I started using this tactic while I was in Q.P.R. and finished 3rd in 1st season.
Then with Man UTD I won Premier League, FA Cup, Capital One Cup and Champions League in one season.
Later I tried it with Wrexham and showed me that this tactic works even in lower leagues.
Here are some pictures of tactic and results:

    Player roles are:

    GK-defend and nothing else
    DL-complete wing back-atack
Shoot less often, more risky passes, cross aim center and run wide with ball
    DR-inverted wing back-support
shoot less often and pass it shorter
    DC are both central defenders-defend
    left MC-ball wining midfielder-support
shoot less, dribble less, shorter pass, fewer risky passes, cross less
    right MC-roaming playmaker-support
shoot less, shorter pass, move into channels, cross less
    AML-winger-attack
shoot less, shorter pass, cross near post
    AMR-winger-attack
shoot less, shorter pass, fewer risky passes, cross near post
    AMC-advanced playmaker-support
dribble less, shorter pass, move into channels
    ST-advanced forward-attack
    shorter pass, fewer risky passes

Can table toppers Chelsea do it on a wet, windy night in Stoke?

    INTRODUCTION

Can table toppers Chelsea do it on a wet, windy night in Stoke? Well on Monday night, we will find out.

Take yourself back – lunchtime on Saturday. Manchester City, Chelsea’s nearest title rival, beat lowly Crystal Palace 3-0 at the Etihad, bringing them level on points with the Blues at the top of the table, and the only thing preventing them from not being top is two goals. This would be a worrying sight for most Chelsea fans, as back in October, the side from West London was nine points clear, and looking down on Southampton, who were surprisingly in second place, and now, just before Christmas, the gap has gone, and Man City look dangerous.

So to restore a gap between the Blues from Manchester and the Blues from London, Mourinho’s men need to get a result against a tough opposition – Stoke City. Now, by the name, you think ‘oh, it’s Stoke, they will win easily. However, you are probably utterly wrong. Manchester City was defeated at their stomping ground by Stoke, and the Potters have also got good results against Chelsea’s rivals Tottenham and Arsenal. This shows that they know how to beat the big boys and certainly will give Chelsea a game.

However, Chelsea really need a result, as Manchester City winning has piled on the pressure, and considering their current from, anything but a positive result would be a huge disappointment for the club and its fans, as well as an opportunity missed. Stoke will feel like, even though Chelsea are rampant at the moment, they can get a result, and will take inspiration from teams that have managed to get a good result against Chelsea away from home, shaping up for an intriguing game for both sets of fans, and the neutral who may want to watch a game.

    STOKE CITY – SUNDERLAND v2?

On the 29th of November, Chelsea travelled to Tyneside to play Sunderland in the tea-time kick off. Most, if not all, expected Chelsea to get the win, having not lost all season, and most expected it not to be Sunderland who got stopped them. However, it happened – Sunderland once again enjoyed a glorious result against Chelsea – following on from the win at Stamford Bridge that ended Chelsea title hopes for that season.

Stoke, in my opinion, have a very similar playing style and squad to Sunderland, so it wouldn’t surprise me if Mark Hughes uses the same tactical set up as Sunderland to try and stop Chelsea from getting the result.

Against Chelsea, Gus Poyet fielded a team that was defensively strong to counter Chelsea abundance of attacking talent, and pace on the wings, in the form of Connor Wickham and Adam Johnson to launch counter attacks onto the Blues’ defence, and Lee Cattermole was given the role of screening the defence.

Stoke have a very similar group of players with the same strengths as Sunderland. For example, they have Charlie Adam who could sit and protect, while providing the creative outlet when needed. Adam also has the competitive streak like Cattermole, and is not afraid to throw himself into a tackle to protect his team. Frenchman Steven N’Zonzi also could do this role well for Stoke, but won’t offer a creative, quick outlet for the Potters, which is needed when trying to play on the counter attack. On the wings, Sunderland have Austrian stalwart Marko Arnautović, who is similar to Adam Johnson – full of trickery and pace to trouble either Ivanovic, Felipe Luis or Azpilicueta. Yes, after not making much of an impact in the first games of the season, and subsequently losing his place in the side, I would play him for this game, as he offers something that Stoke do not have, due to Victor Moses, who has impressed the Potters fans, is injured and ineligible to play against his parent club. On the other wing, I would expect former Barcelona player Bojan to play. He also offers pace and trickery, and would probably cut inside due to him naturally being a forward, like Wickham. This would drag the defender infield, creating space for an onrushing full back to whip in a cross towards Peter Crouch. Crouch is a player, now days that you don’t see. Forwards are more about pace, trickery and playing on the shoulder of the defender, looking to run in behind. However, Crouch is the opposite. He is a target man, someone with height and power to trouble centre backs. Chelsea are very compact and solid through the middle, so pace and trickery, unless you are Papiss Cissé, wouldn’t be effective.

When I have watched Chelsea this season, we always look more vulnerable when the ball is crossed in from wide positions, like we don’t quite know how to deal with them. This is the area that I feel Stoke can exploit, and with Peter Crouch’s added height, it creates an extra problem for Terry and co to deal with.

    CHELSEA - DO OR DIE

For the Blues, this is quite possibly the most important game of the season so far. Get a win, they go three points clear. Lose, and the possibility of Manchester City taking over top spot becomes a reality. Therefore it is a do or die situation for Jose Mourinho and his team. I expect Chelsea to play the strongest side they have – because they know they need the result. The Belgium magician, which goes by the name of Eden Hazard, will have to bring out his best tricks tonight, as it will be tough to break down a well regimented and organised Stoke defence. He needs to stay wide and collect the ball from Fabregas and Matic, and run with it to the by-line dragging the fullback behind his centre backs. He then needs to utilize his burst of pace to get past him, and play a good ball to Diego Costa, who you can guarantee to be in a good position, and not play it back to Fabregas, Matic or Oscar, a pattern that is too regularly used and doesn’t work as usually the tempo is slow and the defence is well organised and deals with it. This happened to much against Sunderland and Newcastle, which is when we played the worst we had all season, and we need the urgency that we had at the start of the season back to really trouble Stoke.

WHAT WILL IT MEAN FOR THE TITLE RACE AND STOKE?

If Chelsea were to win, it will still leave them in the driving seat, and leave Man City chasing. For Stoke, it would not be a huge problem, as Chelsea are a level above the Potters, but it will allow Sunderland to overtake them in the future, and may drag them into a relegation battle. For the Potters, a win would take them above Aston Villa and Everton, and level on points with Liverpool, safely securing a mid-table place for Christmas, an achievement Mark Hughes can be happy with. However, a win for stoke would be disastrous for Chelsea. It will allow an opportunity for Man City to catch up, and they have the easier Christmas fixture list, facing sides such as West Brom, Burnley and Sunderland. They will likely get nine out of nine points from these fixtures, despite not having the services of Aguero, Kompany and Dzeko for some of these games. Chelsea, on the other hand play West Ham, who are flying high at the moment, Southampton and Tottenham. They will still get a fair amount of points from these games, but they will be draining and require Chelsea to play on full throttle. This could give City the advantage, as they will be less tired when it counts later on in the season.

    CONCLUSION

I expect Chelsea to get the win, but it won’t be easy by all means. Stoke will give as a game, trouble us, and may even beat Thibaut Courtois, but we need to make sure we play with urgency, pace and power – and not invite Stoke on to us and give them confidence. Would not be surprised to see Stoke score, but I think Chelsea will be too much.
