It's fair to say, not many of you will know just who Sammy Sulphur is. Well let me explain. The man with the rather unusual name is actually Harrogate Town's mascot, and an entirely new interviewee to the site. After the success of my interview with Birmingham City's Bobby Moseley, I decided to continue looking for people in football who play FM, and came across Sammy, via George Evans, a member on this forum. I contacted Sammy about doing an interview for us, and he agreed. Much like Bobby, I couldn't have wished for a much nicer person! Enjoy the interview, and remember to leave a comment to tell me and Sammy what you thought!

B - How fun is being a mascot for you?
SS - The ability to represent the club that I love is fantastic. I love being able to talk about Harrogate Town, people don't realise what a great family club it is and also just how good non-league football is. Things like the FA cup run, TV appearance and FM are putting us on the footballing map.
B - What is the best save you've ever had on FM?
SS - Difficult one- I'm on a quest on my PC to take Town to the Premiership and am currently struggling to stay in the Championship in 2025. I beat league leaders Bolton wanderers 6-1 away in that season- amazing result that sent shockwaves through the league. For me though a magic moment was an individual piece of brilliance from my star midfielder.
B - What's your best moment playing FM?
SS - For me playing in the 3rd round of the FA cup was a highlight. Harrogate Town got beaten in real life in the FA cup 2nd round by Hastings this season on ESPN away on pens after a replay. I still haven't watched the recording back yet. So to be able to get the team to a place where we automatically qualify for that round was very special. Another was rigging a friendly v arch rivals Guiseley AFC - Town in the Championship, Guiseley somehow in League 2 and then hammering them 4-1- although I was hoping for more. I then saved the screenshot and sent it out to the Guiseley fans. They were gutted!
B - How do you think David Moyes will be able to compare to Sir Alex?
SS - Tough act to follow let's face it! But I think the fact that SAF is still there will help the transition and he will be successful long term.
B - What is your best ever buy on FM?
SS - I bought Theo Walcott at the age of 32 which was pretty cool. Seeing him play for Town was a bit of a rush, he wasn't all that though at that age in his career though and it nearly cost me. There's also a player called Roy Tucker I got in about 2018 on a free and is now worth 3 million- he has an exit clause though so probably going to lose him. He's the guy that scored from his own half.
B - What's the biggest title/trophy you've won in FM?
SS - I haven't won a trophy yet! Getting promoted to the football league was a massive moment and then I was able to get to League 1 quite easily. Since then it’s been really tough to kick on as I still have no budget or transfer budget so finally getting to the Championship. Beating port vale in a playoff final in front of 60000 at Wembley was pretty cool!
B - If you were a regular in Harrogate's first-team, what would be your position? Like, what position do you play when you play footie normally?
SS - In reality I'm a box to box midfielder, all action with the grit of Roy Keane and the right foot hammer of Hasselbaink. If I played for Town I'd love to be the 35 goal a season power forward- Falcao style. Surrounded by fast cars, girls and money.
B - Who do you feel will win the UCL final later this month?
SS - Well Bayern probably have the psychological edge having dominated the Bundesliga. I think though that they will be nervous having lost to Chelsea last year and also there is less pressure on BVB so I think there could be an upset. Score draw and pens- BVB to win!
B - Who is better in your eyes - Messi or Ronaldo? The unanswerable question!
SS - Messi - the stats don't lie.
B - Who do you think is the greatest young prospect in European football at the moment?
SS - Harrogate Town's goalkeeper is 22 and has been touted as the next Joe Hart! Barcelona have a conveyor belt of young strikers they grown, don't they have a new guy coming through who is only 18? Lewandowski is only 24 - he has a massive future ahead of him and available at a snip. Town should swoop for him!
