Wayne Rooney - What's gone wrong?

$

Wayne Rooney. A player who has had such an amazing career, scoring many goals for Manchester United and being a worldwide name in football. However, after his poor performance against Italy, what's gone wrong?

Going into the World Cup, England had a couple for friendlies to play in Miami where Roy Hodgson was going to evaluate all of his players who have a chance of making the first eleven in Manaus.
In their first game they faced Ecuador and Rooney got the start he wanted to show the World that he can perform in an England shirt. Hodgson decided to start the Manchester United forward on a wing which was surprising as he is most effective centrally behind the lone striker, which in this case was recently transferred forward Rickie Lambert.
Rooney didn't start too well however he managed to get a goal after Lambert's elaborate effort hit the post and Rooney followed in for an easy tap in, which gave all the England fans belief that Rooney has hit for just at the right time.

Lambert's effort hit the post and Rooney followed in to tap in the rebound to give England the lead against Ecuador.

However, Rooney didn't really do anything else worthy of writing about throughout the remaining moments of the game and the game finished 2-2. After Rooney's goal, Hodgson looked on with delight thinking that he'll perform well in Brazil, but how wrong was he...

In England's last friendly before heading to Brazil, Rooney started again but this time more centrally against Honduras, in which he wasted many chances and the game ended 0-0. Many England fans were concerned with his performance and many of the TV pundit's criticized Rooney after an abysmal display when he really should be hitting form judging by his previous match against Ecuador.
The English media really hit out at Rooney the day after the Honduras match with many headlines stating that the Manchester United player should not be starting, but instead Hodgson should be giving Everton's Ross Barkley a chance at centre stage against the Italians, however this did not affect Hodgson's team plans and he named the following line-up at the Manuas against Italy;

Rooney was named in the starting XI and was rumoured to be playing in his more favoured central position, however when the match began, we saw him on the left hand side and Raheem Sterling in the centre, which was a very bold move by Hodgson as according to many Rooney is a 'more established' player and should be more central as he is ineffective on the wings.

Rooney struggle playing on the wing as he kept moving towards the centre of the pitch, leaving Leighton Baines to deal with a 2 on 1 situation which is where Italy exploited England and how they scored their first goal, as they won a corner off Baines and from that following corner, the magician by the name of Pirlo, did a superb dummy and Claudio Marchisio finished exquisitely into Joe Hart's bottom right corner to give Italy the lead at the Manuas Stadium.
The only good thing Rooney did all night was supply a pin-point cross towards Daniel Sturridge who flicked the ball into the back of Sirigu's net making it 1-1 and giving England some hope that they could actually win the game and register a huge three points in their opening match.

Rooney supplied a great cross towards Daniel Sturridge at the back post who easily flicked the ball into the back of the net.

But Rooney kept making the same mistake and left Baines outnumbered once more and Italy kept putting in deep crosses which England's centre backs struggled to deal with, and Rooney did not learn from his mistake as he allowed Italy to cross the ball into the back post where Mario Balotelli was waiting and he smashed home his header making it 2-1 to Italy and all fingers were pointed at Rooney for some horrendous defending on the wings which allowed the cross to be played in.

And to make it even worse for the number 10, he had a glorious opportunity to level the game up to 2-2 when he made enough space for himself in Italy's box and you would put money that he'd smash the ball into the bottom corner but nothing was going right for him as he dragged his shot wide of the post which left both England players and fans frustrated with how he played in the whole 90 minutes in England's first World Cup game in Brazil.
England eventually lost the game putting them in a bad position and making the game against Uruguay on Thursday a must win or England's hopes of progressing into the last 16 will have faded away as Costa Rica beat Uruguay in their opening game which was probably the biggest shock so far.

And now building up to that game, many newspapers are calling for Hodgson to be brave and drop Rooney for the match against Uruguay but Hodgson has put his faith in Rooney as newspaper The Sun quotes;

It will be interesting to see what team Hodgson decides to pick for their biggest World Cup game yet against Uruguay but if Rooney does start he will need to prove his doubters that he can perform in an England shirt and make for a memorable time in Brazil.

WC2014 Russia Preview

In preparation for their maiden voyage as World Cup hosts in 2018, Russia successfully qualified for this year's tournament, which will be their first World Cup appearance in over a decade.

Although largely going unnoticed throughout a gruelling qualifying campaign where they narrowly pipped Portugal to top spot, Russia are many people's dark horses for the tournament, and have been drawn in Group H alongside Algeria, Belgium and South Korea.

World Cup History

In their two previous World Cup appearances since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Russia have failed to find a route out of the group stages, but they will be hoping to better that dismal record during this tournament, in one of the most unpredictable groups of them all.

The European Championships have regularly been a much happier hunting ground for the Russians, so they will certainly not fear the prospect of competing against fellow qualifying group winners Belgium, who have been hotly tipped to succeed. And, with two European U-17 Championships to their name, including most recently just last year, the future looks very bright for the world's largest country.

Key Players

Hailing from the same country that produced legendary shot-stopper Lev Yashin, Igor Akinfeev has had some very big boots to fill. However, having been at CSKA Moscow since the age of five, Igor has steadily established himself as one of the best goalkeepers outside of the world's very top leagues and will need to perform to the very best of his ability if Russia are to make it out of the group stages for the first time. If you're still pondering over who to start in goal for your personal world cup fantasy teams, Akinfeev would be a very safe bet indeed.

Much like English players, Russian footballers rarely venture outside of their home nation's leagues, and Igor Denisov is no different. Having previously spent his entire career establishing himself at Zenit, Igor was finally persuaded to leave by high-spending Anzhi Makhachkala, but moved on to Dinamo Moscow just a few games later once Anzhi's off-the-field problems worsened. Denisov will have high ambitions of his own, and will hope to become the first Russian captain to steer his team to the World Cup knockout stages at this tournament.

Everyone in Russia's current roster will dream of playing at their home World Cup, but for some the dream is much less realistic than others. Aleksandr Kerzhakov, currently 31 years of age, is one of those players who may well retire before the Russian showpiece of four years' time. Nevertheless, in what may well be his last World Cup, Kerzhakov poses one of Russia's greatest attacking threats. A prolific goalscorer in the Russian Premier League since the turn of the century, Aleksandr enjoyed a much less fruitful spell during a rare Russian venture outside of the league system while at Sevilla, but with a goalscoring record for his country of almost a goal a game, few can doubt his prowess in front of goal.

Ones to Watch

One of Russia's biggest current prospects, Alan Dzagoev broke onto the international scene at Euro 2012, where his creative performances wowed and excited fans of Russia and all other nations. Although initially linked with a move to a number of top European clubs, Dzagoev opted to continue his development at current club CSKA Moscow, whom he joined in 2008. Whether he is to repeat his 2012 heroics or not, unlike most of his teammates there are plenty more major tournaments around the corner for Alan, and from here he can only continue to improve.

Another exciting, talented attacking midfielder (and I promise you I didn't just include him for the name), Oleg Shatov is definitely one to watch at this World Cup, his first major tournament. With bags of skill and excellent dribbling in his back pocket, the Zenit St Petersburg man is capable of having a decisive influence on the game, either from the start or as an impact sub. Although the hefty price tag he commanded for Zenit was originally in doubt, Shatov's fine performances alongside household names like Hulk and Danny has won him a place in the final squad for this tournament.

The Manager

Not since the days of the daleks has a being made Englishmen cower behind their seats like Fabio Capello. Both a playing and managing legend in his native Italy, Fabio has a decorated CV that would make even José Mourinho drool. Having previously ventured into international management with the aforementioned England, Russia was an entirely new challenge for Capello when he took over in 2012. However, having safely led his players through qualifying, Fabio has settled into the role quickly, and, love him or hate him, there is no better man than Fabio Capello to lead you to your first ever knockout stage.

Predictions

Belgium may have some oustanding players at their disposal, but their lack of tournament experience leaves the door wide open for Russia to sneak into first place. On paper the group is simply too close to call, but with a team and manager as experienced as Fabio's men are, and the inclusion of fresh, young talents like Dzagoev, Shatov and others, Russia should safely qualify from Group H, but will undoubtedly struggle once they reach a historic first Round of 16 at the World Cup.

Developing Youth Players On Football Manager

Intro

Everybody dreams of masterminding a team full of regens to countless titles but how do you develop your regens in to the stars of the future? Is there some sort of secret formula? No, there is no set writing in stone for developing players. How you develop your players is up to you and every manager has a different style of coaching. In this guide, I offer my knowledge on developing youth players. I'm not saying that it is perfect but it has offered me a lot of good results, most notably in the graphic below (FM13). Like I said, there is no wrong or right way to train your players but consider what is in this guide.

Team Training

Team training is the general training which the players in your team undergo. This is where your players will receive most of their education on the training ground as they work together to develop their skills in a similar manner. There are numerous aspects to team training including training focus, training intensity, scheduling and rest days before/after matches.
  • Training Focus: This is the area of football which your team will focus on in training. The options to focus on are as follows: Balanced, Fitness, Tactics, Ball Control, Defending, Attacking, Team Cohesion. During pre-season, you may wish to focus on Fitness, Tactics or Team Cohesion in order to prepare your squad for the new season. Like I said earlier, your training can be however you like it to be, although I do recommend setting your training focus to the type of football which you have your team play. For me, I play very technical, possession football, so I have the training focus set to Ball Control to make my players more comfortable on the ball. If you play defensive football, set your focus to Defending, etc.

  • Training Intensity: This is how hard you work your team in training. There are five levels available, ranging from Very Low to Very High. The harder you work your team, the more training they get but it increases the chances of injury, it tires out your players more and they are more likely to be unhappy with training. I would personally set it to Average but you can tinker with it to find what suits your team best.

  • Scheduling: This is how you schedule general training and match-focused training. The more match training scheduled, the less general training you have, and vice versa. The more match training you do, the more prepared you are for your games. However, if you focus too much on match training, your players may not benefit as they lose out on valuable general team training. I personally spend 20%-30% of team training on match preparation, so that I can use the rest of the time to strengthen the team in the areas I wish.

  • Rest Days Before/After Matches: Rest days are days when your team has no training at all. You can have rest days before matches and rest days after matches. I personally only have rest days after matches so that my players don’t miss out on training but if you find your fixture list congested with 4+ games in the space of two weeks, it would be a good idea to rest your players so that they do not get injured and they have more recovery time between fixtures.

Individual Training

This is where you define each individual player in the way which you want them to play. For example, you could turn a fast, technical attacking midfielder in a patient, creative deep lying playmaker with the correct training. There are three aspects to individual training: Individual Role/Specific Attribute, Positonal & Preferred Player Moves.
  • Individual Roles/Specific Attribute: This is where you finetune a player’s attributes through focus on a certain set of attributes (individual role) or a single, specific attribute. You should always look to train individual roles rather than just one attribute, as this will see that player develop quickly in a whole set of different attributes. However, if you see the opportunity to improve a single attribute which would make the player more valuable, then you should focus on that specific attribute. There are three different intensities available: Light, Average & Heavy. I prefer to keep it on Average unless the player has high Work Rate, Professionalism & Determination, as they could easily become unhappy if they find the training is too intense for them.

  • Positional: Here you can train a player to be able to play in a different position. Before you do this, you should take in to account whether or not the player has suitable attributes to play in that position and even then, he may struggle to adjust to play there. However, this could be very useful for versatile players to learn new positions as it gives you more options in your line-up, as well as making your players more well-rounded.

  • Preferred Player Moves: These are skills or habits (PPMs) which players pick up through tutoring, training or naturally. They range from Placing Shots to Diving In To Tackles and there are plenty for every type of player. If you think that a certain PPM would suit one of your players and would be good for them to have in their locker, have a coach teach him one as this could certainly make that player more effective on the pitch.

Coaching Staff & Facilities

A large part of a player’s development comes down to the quality of the coaching staff that train him. If you don’t have good coaches, your players won’t benefit from them, quite simply. When you’re looking at coaches to bring in to your team, you should look for coaches with high Determination, Motivating, the ability to speak the language of your club’s nation, proven experience and they are good in a certain coaching area, such as Attacking or Defending, etc. It would be a good idea to bring in coaches who speak the same language as some of the foreign players in your team, as your foreign players may find it easier to communicate with them rather than domestic-born coaches.

Just as with your coaching staff; the better your facilities, the more your players will improve. It is important to constantly develop your facilities to the highest possible level in order to get the best out of your players. On a side note, better facilities also attracts better players to your club, so you should keep that in mind too. However, on another side note, you need to be careful that you do not spend too much money on facilities as your club may fall short on FFP regulations due to large spending. All in all, better coaches and better facilities develop your players better.

Tutoring

What is tutoring in FM? This is when experienced players, under your demands, take younger, less experienced players under their wing on and off the training ground. Tutors will help younger players to settle in to the squad, they will make them comfortable with training, be a friend to them, and help develop their attributes. It is important for your tutors to have good mental attributes and to be of a similar personality to the player you wish to be tutored. You may find that if a young player enjoyed their tutoring experience, they might have picked up a Preferred Player Move from the tutor. As well as seeing the young player become more intelligent on the pitch, tutoring will help bring your squad together, if used correctly.

Game Time & Happiness

The one thing that every young player needs to develop is time on the pitch getting first-team experience. ‘Oh well I can just send them out on loan and see how they do’ – is not the answer, in most cases. The odds are that you will end up loaning your players out to clubs with a lesser coaching staff and poor facilities, meaning that they could not possibly reach their potential. This is alright if you’re planning on loaning out youth players who don’t have the potential to become star players for you. If you have youth player who has the potential to become a very good player for your team’s standard, give him some time in your first team in less important games to give him experience. This way he links up with his future team-mates, he gets on better with you and you can dictate how he trains, rather than an untrustworthy manager possibly destroying his career for his own benefit. ‘Well in that case, when do I give my youth players game time?’ Once your youth player begins to have the ability to be somewhat useful for your first team, you should look at your fixture list and decide which games you can risk playing them in. The more games they play, the quicker they develop. However, you should be careful that they do not pick up an injury as senior football is a lot more physical than youth football.

Coming to the last piece of developing youth players, and one of the most important in my opinion, is the happiness of your youth players. If your players are not happy, they will not put in the effort and will therefor not improve at a desired rate. You need to constantly check on your youth players to see if they are happy with their training and in general and if they are not happy, find an effective solution quickly. If you can keep your youth players happy, they will develop quickly and they will play better for the club.

WC2014 Uruguay Preview

The Uruguay team is built on the foundations of the successful 2010 World Cup campaign, with the added bonus of Luis Suarez coming into his absolute prime. Always positive, gaffer Oscar Tabarez is convinced that this squad didn’t need fresh blood. Diego Lugano is still captain, Arevalo Rios is still his midfield general and Diego Forlan is still reliable in attack, thanks to his wonderful free-kicks.

The recipe won’t change much from last time: Uruguay will bet on solid defending, won’t be desperate for possession, and will bide their time and attack space. The more markers Suarez attracts, the more room Cavani & Co. will find.

World Cup History

Although Uruguay's World Cup successes come very far back into the past, they do have a good history in the tournament after winning it twice, in 1930, the first ever World Cup and Uruguay hosted and 1950, coincidentally when Brazil hosted it for the first time. On top of two World Cup's they've won the Copa América a mighty 15 times.

Key Players

Uruguay have arguably the best strikeforce going into the World Cup this year with Cavani and Suarez leading the way with Forlan as the back up.

Luis Suárez - Striker

The man from Salto is going into the World Cup off the back of the best season of his career at Liverpool in the Premier League. He finished the season without a Premier League trophy but with 31 goals and the Golden Boot after leaving his strike partner Daniel Sturridge 10 goals behind him in 2nd place in the top scorers list. He will be the heart of Uruguay's attack this World Cup.

Edinson Cavani - Striker

Suárez's partner in crime for this World Cup. He signed for Ligue 1 rich kids Paris Saint-Germain for a jawdropping €64 million in August 2013, and alongside the Swede Zlatan Ibrahimovic, scored 16 goals in 30 matches finishing as one of the top scorers in Ligue 1. Him and Suárez will be a deadly partnership this Summer.

Diego Godín - Defender

While Suárez and Cavani are bullying opposition defenders, Uruguay need a man to keep it steady at the back and Godín is definitely the man to do so. Godín was an integral part of Atlético Madrid's Champions League adventure this season so Uruguay will be heavily relying on Godín to keep is safe defensively.

Ones to Watch

Hiding behind Suárez and Cavani's array of talents are some hidden gems in the Uruguay squad. Lets take a look.

Wálter Gargano - Midfielder

After impressing Inter boss Walter Mazzari, Gargano has been playing just in front of the defence this season and has been a shining light in what has been another poor season for Inter. Gargano is regarded as aggressive to Serie A fans and that sort of bite in the middle of the park is maybe what Uruguay need for this World Cup.

Arévalo Ríos - Midfielder

Ríos was Uruguay's star player in midfield in the 2010 World Cup held in South Africa. Because Uruguay's best players play in Europe, Ríos sneaks under the radar in terms of ability after spending all his career apart from a one year spell in Palermo, outside Europe. Like Gargano, Ríos is a reasonably aggressive player but knows how to get the team ticking.

Manager

Óscar Tabárez

Tabárez hasn't had the most influential playing careers ever, spending most of his time in Uruguay's top league which, lets face it, isn't the best. But his CV in management is very good after having two spells at Boca Juniors, the top dogs in Argentina, two spells at Serie A's Cagliari, a short time at Vélez and five unsuccessful months at A.C. Milan. On top of this, this is Tabárez's second spell at Uruguay having previously managed them for two years between 1988 and 1990.

Prediction

Uruguay have been placed in a tough group with England, Italy and Costa Rica who may use the underdog label to their advantage to shock everyone. If Uruguay could get their forwards scoring they could breeze through Group D. Uruguay are tournament-savvy and Luis Suárez is in the form of his life. Surely they can't "do a 1950" again, can they?

France WC2014 Tactic

$
0
0

While France may have had a nervy qualifying campaign, manager Didier Deschamps has changed up his tactics for the tournament, and so far, it looks to be very effective. After a comfortable win against Honduras, and with many other of the big teams struggling, France look to be the real dark horse’s in this competition, and even without star winger Franck Ribery, look to have a very strong side. This tactic is based on Deschamps’ revamped style of play with France implemented into FM, to create an extremely deadly tactic with many sides.

Roles

The tactic itself, like in real life, is based heavily on the wingers in the team. The right wing especially, will act as your main attacking playmaker, and most of your play will revolve around him. Your left wide man will act as an out and out winger, and he should be relied upon to act on his own at times, as he will be one of the only men attacking at times. Your central midfield three will need to be defensively solid, and all of them will need to have good passing and distribution skills. The furthest right of the three will be the most defensive, winning the ball, before initiating the attack. The left centre mid will need to have good stamina and pace to get up and down the pitch as a box to box midfielder, while your central midfielder will combine the two, acting as a deep lying playmaker who can both get forward and get back when needed. Your striker will need to be a strong presence in the air, as lots of the chances he will receive will be from crosses. He also needs to be skilled off the ball, opening up chances for your wingers and midfielders, who will be pushing into attack a lot. Defensively, your fullbacks will provide the width in your side and will need to be quick and good decision makers, so they can judge when to go forward and when to stay back. Your centre backs are the key to your team, and if they do not perform the tactic will not work as effectively. The ball playing centre back needs to be able to win the ball regularly, and move the ball into midfield and let his side move forward in numbers, similar to a total football style, whereas the other centre back will be less mobile, but more physically adept, being the main man to stop crosses. Finally, your goalkeeper will need to have very good reflexes, and strong in one on one situations as well as a good commander of his box.

Screenshots

Applying this tactic to the French national team in FM, I was able to achieve a great deal, and personally was very surprised at how ruthless this tactic was in all areas.

The fixtures speak for themselves; not a single loss through the season except for the World Cup Final, just 2 goals conceded in 12 games before the World Cup quarter finals, these factors, combined with the fact that I was able to take France, a team not expected to challenge for the title especially on FM, into the final with this tactic even when the players weren’t fully familiar with it, shows just how great it is. Defensively, it is the best tactic I have ever played with, and provided a solid defence and keeper, your opposition will find it very hard to break through. Attacking-wise, you can see that the further into the season, the more goals were scored, culminating in a 5-1 thrashing of Chile in the quarter finals. For a club, the tactic would be assimilated into the players by the end of preseason, so you would be achieving these kinds of results through the rest of the campaign.

These awards for the French players participating in this tournament, closes any argument that this is not a deadly tactic. Firstly, and most amazingly, the World Player of the Year was won by Valbuena, a player who, at the start of the year in FM, was rated 2 stars for France, and the assistant manager didn’t believe he even deserved a place in the squad. Now, he ended up as the top assister, setting up 6 goals, and therefore won the Best Player award, over some of the world’s best. Next, we see the Dream Team, and this gives a great representation of how it can turn every player into a world beater. The entire right hand side of the Dream Team, consisting of 7 of the 11 players in the starting 11, were French players. The right hand side of this tactic is where the majority of chances come from, and this shows, that if you have good enough players, it can become sensational. Finally, Hugo Lloris won the Best Keeper Award, which is a tribute to the exceptional defensive record this tactic produced, and how it can be unbreakable, helping you not drop silly points against small sides, as well as staying solid against larger sides.

Conclusion

This tactic is one which takes France’s style of play in real life, and with a few small adjustments, turns into a impregnable, goal scoring machine of a tactic. While you may not get instant results, after you purchase the required players to fill in the gaps in your roles, and everyone is fully familiar with it, it will produce some great results for me. Please give me any feedback you have after using it, as I would love to hear about your experiences with the best tactic I have ever used in FM.

without dozens of shortly updates.

Once downloaded this Megapack you can always make a request for missing ingame faces. Please post a request by adding;
- Name of player
- Unique FM player ID
- Link to picture

I generally don’t offer download-links for my tactics, mostly because I feel they have little or no added value when you don’t understand the reasoning behind the ideas and choices the creator has made. This also means that you will not only get a download-link, but a bit of a background story as well. I have dubbed my tactic Strikerless Sexy Football because that what the tactic delivers, just the way that pretentious prick Gullit envisaged it originally.

I have to admit, Gullit has a way with words. If his coaching skills matched his vocabulary and oral skills, he’d be able to rival Sir Alex. Sadly, it did not, so all the dreadlocked Dutchman has to show for his coaching career is an FA Cup with Chelsea and the coining of the phrase Sexy Football, which had fuck all to do with John Terry’s off-the-pitch antics. No, Gullit used this term to describe teams who played the game in a smooth, elegant and effortless style: teams comprised of artists who could evoke the highest spiritual consciousness through exceptional technique and intimacy with the ball.

If you think that sounds rather pretentious and exceptionally twattish, you’re probably right as well. On the other hand, I prefer to let videos do the talking for me. Just have a look at some of these moves and then tell me it’s not fluid, smooth football, indeed the sexy football Gullit was ranting about.

I reckon that covers the bit where I explain the title of the tactic. Sexy football because of the smooth passing and fluid player movement. I guess that leads me to the formation I use, which is a narrow strikerless 4-1-2-3.

The formation I have picked is, for me anyway, the ideal formation to generate the maximum amount of movement and overlap, so we can overload opposing teams in key areas. What you want to look for are a few wide players to stretch the defence, a central passing outlet for the central defenders and a tight midfield for maximum effect in playing one-two’s. If you look at a heat-map for the formation, you can see why I say this.

The half-back screens in front of the central defenders, providing a disrupting factor for attacking midfielders in a defensive sense, as well as acting as a passing outlet for the central defenders in an attacking sense. I am well aware that the defenders could just pass it towards the wing-backs, but I prefer the first pass to be towards a more central player, to prevent an opposing team from closing down all passing lanes too easily.

Going forward, the team’s forward trio are close together. The middle of the three acts as an Enganche. With slightly tweaked instructions, I hope he can act as a sort of Withdrawn Targetman in the attacking midfield section of the pitch. I have dubbed this player the Targetganche. The players flanking him are Shadow Strikers, who look to get on the end of a through ball or a flick-on.

With a distinct lack of strikers in any strikerless formation, by default you are going to rely on the movement of your midfield players to score goals. I want to look at overloading the oppositions defence. Overloading is a potentially powerful weapon, which can be achieved by both formations as well as team instructions.

As you can see, the attacking midfield trio is clustered closely together, which automatically gives them a numerical advantage against most opponents. They then look to overload central areas to facilitate building up from the back and through the thirds. With a lack of forwards, outnumbered in the final third when the opposition is prepared, this then means that the trio looks to play in between the lines in the final third and that the remainder of the team should look to break forward to support. The emphasis is very much placed on positioning.

The key player in this whole positioning battle is the Enganche, who is not the traditional hook betwee midfield and attack, because we lack an actual attack in the traditional sense. What I wanted was a cross-pollination of the targetman role and the enganche role. In a way, it makes sense, as the enganche already encorporates some of the qualities a targetman is supposed to offer to a team. Mix up the enganche and the targetman and ideally you get the Targetganche™, or the Withdrawn Targetman I want to see in the game. He will hold up the ball and bring his team-mates into play, choosing how and when to pass the ball to maximise the potential of the attacking movement.

In an ideal situation, I would be able to tweak the current enganche role to my likings. Unfortunately, I was unable to make the Targetganche hold up the ball as much as I would like to. Basically, the Targetganche showed two dimensions in his style of play. The first dimension means the Targetganche often takes a touch before quickly passing the ball along, instead of holding it up to ensure players link up or move into advanced positions. In a match, it would look a little something like this.

It looks like a fine goal and the Targetganche really plays an important role in the whole attack, setting it up from midfield and ending the attack with the assist for the goal-scorer. When you break down the move, it shows you the beauty of strikerless football as well as, on a slightly unrelated note, why I’d love the Withdrawn Targetman to be an actual new role in FM15.

In the initial stage of the attack, Targetganche Vankan, highlighted in red, plays as a proper targetman, his back being towards the goal and he has actually dropped back into attacking midfield, whilst the two flanking Shadow Strikers, highlighted in blue, have taken up advanced positions, one of them even in an off-side position beyond the AZ defensive line. In an ideal situation, the Targetganche can hold up the ball to have the players take up attacking positions, before flicking the ball on towards the Shadow Strikers. Sadly, despite being asked to play risky passes, Vankan swivels and looks for a short option.

Vankan swivels on the ball and plays a short pass towards one of the central midfielders, Jankovic. The Shadow Strikers are still in advanced positions, even though they have clustered together on the left side of the attack. Towards the bottom of that screenshot, you can see the right wing-back making a threatening run forward.

Jankovic passes the ball back to Vagner, who indeed recognises the run made by the right wing-back and plays the ball towards Kouakou. Vankan meanwhile is unmarked by opposing players and takes up a position near the edge of the box, looking to support the two Shadow Strikers.

As Kouakou surges past an opponent, the Shadow Strikers take up advanced forward positions, with the Enganche remaining behind them and indeed being overtaken by the Central Winger linking up. Effectively, our four players are drawing the AZ defence close together, which means that a well-timed run can send a player clear of defence with no chance of recovery by a wide defender cutting inside.

Kouakou’s run leads him to the back-line and draws out two defenders. With the defenders focussing on the advanced forwards, the Shadow Strikers, no-one is actually paying attention to the Targetganche. Vankan surges past the defenders to connect with the low, driven cross by Kouakou. Making a run from the edge of the box, sees the Targetganche unmarked near the first post.

The cross comes in low and Vankan again swivels on the ball before laying it back for the onrushing Shadow Striker to tap into the back of the net. Whilst it’s hardly the way I actually wanted the Targetganche to play, it certainly does work against a team like AZ, where the opposition drops back and offers little or no space to actually exploit.

Oddly enough, the Targetganche seems to perform better as a mobile threat, connecting with crosses than as the actual bulky powerhouse, chesting down passes or flicking them on. In terms of actually holding up the ball, the Targetganche doesn’t really do it, instead taking only one or two touches before quickly passing the ball along.

Oddly enough, I’ve seen the actual Targetganche motions most in matches where the opposition pushes up and tries to actively fight us off, which is strange considering the fact that I wanted a role like this to break down stubborn defences all pouring into their own box. In the above video you can see the Targetganche play in the way I actually want him to play, the second dimension to his style of play.

In the initial stages of the attack, the Targetganche, highlighted in red, takes up a more advanced position compard to the two Shadow Strikers, highlighted in blue. The Shadow Strikers try to contribute defensively by dropping deep, keeping up with opposing players who are pushing forward. The Targetganche is the advanced attacking focal point for the initial stages of the attack, looking to play in his team-mates.

As Matas wins the ball, Vankan takes up position with his back to goal, whilst the Shadow Strikers are preparing to make their runs forward. A few easy passes will see Vankan in possession, at which point he can set up the attack. The movements by the Shadow Strikers also help to relieve the amount of pressure on the Targetganche, as defenders seem more likely to pick up runners instead of more static players.

With the movement of the Shadow Strikers and wing-backs, the opposing defence remains stretched. The two centre-backs are supposed to pick up the Shadow Strikers, whilst the wing-backs are supposed to pick up the runs of their counter-parts. This means the defensive line has to stay wide, allowing for gaps in the defence. When the wing-backs would cut inside to help the central defenders, they would cede the wings, allowing our wing-backs to dominate the flanks.

In this case, Vankan actually does hold up the ball and he dribbles forward. One of the central defenders actually steps out to take on Vankan, allowing the Shadow Striker space to move away, effectively breaking the defensive line. Because the defence is stretched by our own wing-backs, there is no-one in the direct vacinity to cover the run by the Shadow Striker.

Vankan keeps hold of the ball long enough to allow the defender to step out quite far, allowing the Shadow Striker a lot of time to make his run into space. Just before Vankan actually gets pressured, he can release an easy through-ball into space for the Shadow Striker to pounce upon.

On that note, I feel I have pretty much explained how the tactic works the way it does. This leaves me with just a simple download link. Click the big red "Download Now" button at the top to grab the tactic.
