FMC FLUT skin for FM 2014 v.2.0 [Updated 29.05.2014]

Skin style FMC for FM 2014 career mode (1920x1080 and 1600x900).

I'm pleased to present you the new update of the version 2.0 of FMC FLUTSkin for FM 14 (white version).

Thanks to all for your reported bugs. A special thanks to rune (from german Meistertrainerforum) and leo_crumb.

As always I would appreciate it if you could tell me when and in what circumstances (or panels) the bugs arise.

This FlutSkin version includes lots of changes in 1920x1080 version (not the 1600x900).

Note that although you can find the two versions of the skin, I only updated 1920x1080 version.

Here is the most important tweaks in the update for FlutSkin version 2.0:

- Inbox mail (left side of the panel) now appears the name of the media below the text.
- Fixed the panel of media profile.
- New changes in player attributes profile (including the same kit picture that is included in player profile)
- Bigger pictures in backroom advice, and inbox news.
- Staff and facilities box in training overview panel included
- New competition team and player stats
- New competition calendar
- New small icons for staff recommendation/capacity/potential
- New trophies (in order to choose that one you prefer I kept the others from “Champions League skin” of a31632, to whom I want to give recognition)
- Solved the problem with squashed columns in analyses screens (and in some other panels).

And lots of other small tweaks that I really don’t remember ;-)

WC2014 England Preview

England, the host of possibly the biggest league in the world, The Barclays Premier League. However, when it comes to the World Cup, lets say they haven't been as successful as they should have been, and under the leadership of Roy Hodgson, England fans believe maybe this is the year.

England were put in Group D, and have to face the challenge of Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica, two of which have won the World Cup before and have some very dangerous players that England will need to stop, most notably Luis Suarez and Mario Balotelli. They will need to pick the best squad possible to neutralise the threat of these teams, but under Hodgson's guidance, it's very much possible.

World Cup History

England aren't blessed with the best of histories in the World Cup, with their only success being in 1966 after beating West Germany 4-2 after extra-time, however they could not keep up this tradition and have failed many of times to get back the World Cup Trophy, with the result of many manager sackings and disappointing group stages.

Key Players

England, like all teams have those 'stand-out' players, Argentina have Messi, Brazil have Neymar, but who do England have? None other than Wayne Rooney, who doesn't have the best World Cup record but his work-rate is second to none, he will commit himself both going forward and dropping back to defend. He will be a key figure in England's hunt for their first World Cup final victory since 1966.

England are also blessed with a very solid and experienced midfielder, Steven Gerrard, who has had an amazing career both at club and internation level. He will add experience and knowledge in the heart of midfield and could play a huge part in stopping various threats, especially from his Liverpool team-mate Luis Suarez. He will most likely be the first name on the team sheet as his leadership skills as captain can motivate his team-mates in the most important games.

In the defence, Gary Cahill could also be a huge factor in England's quest for World Cup victory after he endured a very good season for Chelsea and he is heading to Brazil in excellent form. His ability in the air and his knowledge of the game will be a key asset to England's back four. He also has very good pace due to his height meaning he can catch the fastest of opponents before they can attack England's goal.

And finally England's man between the sticks, Joe Hart, may be a huge factor to how England do in the World Cup. Althought he has a poor spell for Manchester City, the shot-stopper picked himself up before the end of the season and aided Manchester City to winning the Premier League Title. His ability in goal will give his team-mates trust and confidence and if it comes down to a penalty shoot-out, you can bet that Joe Hart will do his best to save every penalty.

Players to Watch

Now every World Cup there are surprises, especially when it comes to younger players being called up, and for England there is no exception. Hodgson has decided to call up some younger players who have had a very good season. We'll start with Ross Barkley, a player who has really impressed for Everton this season ans has attracted huge interest from some of Europe's biggest clubs. Hodgson has called him up and hopefully he'll play enough minutes to show just how good he can be.

Hodgson also surprised us all and left out the experienced Ashley Cole for one of Southampton's rising stars, Luke Shaw. The young full-back has really stepped up his game this season just gone and will offer a lot going forward and will be a very good back-up for Leighton Baines. Shaw will hopefully be given a chance but he will have to settle with being a back-up to Leighton Baines, who is a more established left-back. Shaw will be given a chance if not at this World Cup, the next one for sure.

The Manager

England are led by a very experienced manager, that being Roy Hodgson, who has had many spells at some big clubs in England and has managed Switzerland, who he managed to take to the round of 16 in the 1994 World Cup. This was a huge achievement as Switzerland hadn't qualified since the 1966 World Cup. Hodgson knows his stuff and has the experience needed to lead England to the World Cup Final. He has selected a very well balanced team and has prepared the players well, he is just hoping that they can all perform to their very best when they head off to Brazil.

Unavailable due to Injury

But like all teams, England have been struck by the World Cup curse and have some players missing which would possibly dent their hopes for a good finish. The most notable absentees being Tottenham's Kyle Walker and Southampton's Jay Rodriguez, who hit the best form of his career before gaining a very bad injury, excluding him from selection. Many players who were injured have recovered in time for selection, with the most recent one being Phil Jones, who is back to full training after damaging his shoulder against Hull City.

Prediction

The media have predicted that England should progress out of their group and possibly get into the quarter finals. The media always put high expectation on England and it's up to the whole team to make sure they meet these expectations or yet again there will be a huge uproar from the media which could cost Roy Hodgson his job, depending on where England finish.

In conclusion, my opinion is that England can progress out of their group and make it to the quarter finals. I do not expect us to win the competition due to the high quality teams but if Hodgson gets his tactics and team spot on, we could be in for a memorable World Cup.

What is your expectation from England for the 2014 World Cup?

Can Football Manager Predict the 2014 World Cup?

In this exciting new project we've simulated the 2014 World Cup in Brazil 200 times. Yes, 200 times! All of this time and effort is to try and answer the question -- Can Football Manager 2014 predict this year’s World Cup in Brazil?
  • We'll be looking at every team that has won the competition in this 200 set simulation.

  • A glance at -- teams of the tournament and a few other interesting discoveries along the way.

  • It's also worth noting that the video featured below covers the entire project, but if you'd prefer the text based version then please continue reading. This is a 1400 word article so it’s entirely up to you.

The 200 winners provided very few surprises with 17 unique winners. Some of the more unlikely teams included -- Russia, Switzerland, Nigeria, Cameroon and Ivory Coast. Of course the perennial contenders all featured heavily -- Spain, Argentina, Brazil, Italy and Germany. Interestingly Football Manager 2014 suggests that Holland and England are much more likely to with the tournament than Belgium. Perhaps that is an indication that it values current ability over potential. The vast majority of the Belgium side are much younger in comparisons to Holland and England who are pinning their hopes on senior stars such as Robin Van Persie, Arjen Robben, Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard. Players like Thibaut Courtois and Romelu Lukaku are coming into the tournament after fantastic seasons out on loan. Please note - Football Manager 2014 can't account for player’s improvement past the January data update.

Essentially we are using 4 month old player stats as a guideline to how teams will perform at this year’s World Cup. Every team is in the same situation though, it simply hurts teams with young squads and potential stars more than it does sides with established players and well-known names. It’s worth noting that any players who have improved dramatically in the last few months wouldn’t see that benefit in Football Manager either, so that needs to be taken into consideration when looking at any results.

There are a few key takeaways from the above results table that I’d like to breakdown.

Firstly it goes against the current odds for the competitions with Brazil and Argentina holding favouritism with the bookmakers. Seemingly Football Manager 2014 doesn't take into consideration that the World Cup will be played in South America and no European team has ever won on that continent. Even when you compare sides such as Argentina and Italy there isn't a huge different in results with only 3% (or 6 wins outs of 200) splitting the sides.

There is a big jump from the two 11th placed teams, Portugal and Uruguay, both with 4 wins each (2.0% respectively) to sides in the top 10. This would seem to indicate Football Manager identifies a gap in quality between those sides.

The below graph illustrates the difference in likelihood between teams:

As a general comment it's worth saying that sides in the World Cup classed as "dark horses" haven't fared well in this simulation. Uruguay, Colombia and even Belgium would be expected to have more of a chance of lifting the trophy on July 13th at the Maracanã.

Food for thought

I'd be interested to hear people's thoughts on this but I'll provide a few topics of discussion.
  • Are the "mid-level" European nations overrated - It's very obvious that sides like France, Italy and Holland are going into the competition on a similar level to Uruguay for example, but seem to hold much more favour in Football Manager 2014. Are England really four times more likely to win the competition than Uruguay?

  • Is the Brazilian climate accounted for at all in Football Manager 2014 - This was mentioned above but it's worth revisiting, this adds to the previous point when comparing the likes of Uruguay and Colombia to mid-level European sides. Additionally Spain are clearly the most likely to win the competition according to Football Manager 2014. I'd personally put that down as the Spanish side being overrated in the game as much as the points made about climate and other teams involved.

When analysing the data I, at least subconsciously, ignored the bottom 5 sides – Russia, Switzerland, Nigeria, Cameroon and Ivory Coast. I feel that the game is always going to through up some anomalies and if we ran this simulation 1000 times then many more smaller nations would feature at the very bottom of the list.

Mexico, Japan, Bosnia, USA and South Korea could easily replace the aforementioned 5 bottom ranked sides I don't think it would have much impact on the findings. As I said earlier, they are simply anomalies that are bound to happen when performing a simulation within a football management computer game.

The Players

Below is a sample of a dream team that was produced by one of the two hundred simulations.

It wouldn't be viable to post all of the dream teams that were created during the simulation but I felt the below team gave the best representation of what is likely to happen according to Football Manager 2014.

I think firstly I should mention the one exception from the "best representation" that I mentioned earlier. Masoud - I don't think I saw him feature in the best XI at any other point in the 200 run simulation. The rest of the players feature frequently though. Players like Iniesta, Llorente, Silva, Mata, Ramos, Alba and Casillas are nearly always included from Spain, Pique and Navas are others who often feature. It's seemingly a selection of around 5 or 6 Spanish players every time they do well in the tournament. I imagine part of this is based on in-game reputation and of course another part is related to average rating during the tournament.

Neymar is usually in the starting XI of the World Cup 2014 Dream Team. Brazil regularly reach the semi-final or final and he's practically always integral to that.

Luis Suarez, Uruguay won 4 of 200 World Cups during the simulation. Suarez won 3 player of the tournaments and Edison Cavani won it on the other occasion.

Kevin De Bruyne is quite often the only representative from Belgium in the dream team. I'd say on average he appears more than Eden Hazard or Vincent Kompany which of course seems slightly odd.

To only see one German player featuring is very unusual and to see no Italians is even rarer. As I mentioned above, I was forced to pick a sample World Cup so I could talk about specific examples of players. You'll see below the actual results of that World Cup. As a general rule Italy would do much better and therefore more players would feature. The same can be said about Germany but to a lesser extent.

It's a shame I couldn't find an example that ticked every box but I felt this was the best example to document the findings of the simulation. Teams like Spain, Brazil, Argentina, France and Germany very often get to the later stages and not to have a "random" team in the semi-finals meant it was much easier to show a good example of what usually happens at the World Cup in Football Manager 2014.

Summary

Firstly I'd like to state that I fully appreciate that this isn't in any way a predictive model or something other than an interesting idea based around a computer game. With that being said, I think some of the finding could spark debate and certainly make people think a little more about how teams are evaluated in the game in comparison to public opinion or a firm making odds for the World Cup.

The 200 team simulation has made me think a little bit more about some of the flaws in Football Manager 2014 but it has also made me appreciate that overall it isn't far short or what most people would expect to happen at the World Cup. Teams such as Spain, Brazil and Argentina to do very well and the potential to see a surprise team come from nowhere and have a very competitive tournament.

Regarding the actual result, Football Manager 2014 predicts Spain will win the World Cup!

WC2014 Mexico Preview

$

0
Mexico, the Land of Shaking Earth, will be looking to shake up the World Cup this year when they visit Brazil. While the reputation of their league system is perhaps at a loss due to the raw power of the European leagues as well as USA's MLS, Mexico's national team is by no means an easy one to overcome. They produce top-class youth on a regular basis and that was seen in the latest summer Olympics of 2012 in London, when they overcame everybody to claim the gold medal at Wembley.

Drawn in to Group A, Mexico face three tough oppositions in the hosts Brazil, as well as Croatia and Cameroon. All three of these teams possess devastating attacks, just like Mexico, and there are sure to be some exciting goal-crazy matches in this group. Mexico's manager, Miguel Herrera, will need to make a shrew team selection as he will need to nullify his oppositions' star attackers such as Neymar, Luka Modric and Samuel Eto'o.

World Cup History

Despite having never won a World Cup in their history, Mexico have reached the quarter-finals of the competition on two occasions, both at World Cups in Mexico, in their fourteen times competing in the world's most prestigious football competition. They will be aiming to make their fifteenth World Cup a more memorable one.

Key Players

Mexico will need their key players to perform if they are to have any chance of progressing from the group stages. While Brazil have Neymar and Croatia have Modric, Mexico have their star striker Javier Hernández to rely on to score their goals. He may have found it difficult to break in to Manchester United's starting eleven but when he does appear for his club side, he makes a great impression on the game. His strengths lie in his movement and his clinical touch in front of goal. If Mexico are to progress, they will need Hernández to find the net regularly.

Of course, Hernández will need both supply and support up front in Mexico's efforts and Carlos Vela is the perfect man to have to fill that role. Vela, who can be deployed on either the wing or up front, has struck gold since moving from Arsenal to Real Sociedad in 2011, first on loan and then permanently. His goal-scoring record is extremely impressive considering the role he plays in the team, and he scored over twenty goals for his club in the past season. Carlos Vela will play an important role this summer.

While Hernández and Vela are important in Mexico's quest for goals, it is Héctor Moreno who will play a crucial part in their defence. The Espanyol defender has been solid for his club side this season and comes to the World Cup with a lot of weight on his shoulders. Mexico's defence is significantly weaker than their attack so Moreno will need to be able to lead his fellow defenders well and make sure that they don't give opposition many opportunities to score.

Players To Watch

Mexico have a couple of players who you should keep an eye out for. The first of these is Andrés Guardado of Valencia. Despite playing over fifteen matches for his club this season, he was subsequently loaned out to German side Bayer Leverkusen where he played five games. The left winger's strengths are his electrifying pace and his ability to cross the ball. If given the chance, Guardado could potentially shine for his side and make the difference in their campaign.

Mexico's second player who you should keep an eye out for is Villareal striker Giovani dos Santos. The Barcelona product scored twelve goals in his debut season for El Submarino Amarillo and looked very impressive as he helped his team to a surprisingly-high 6th place, after just being promoted from Liga Adelante. dos Santos is very versatile and can play in any attacking position effectively thanks to his fantastic technical skills and pace. This World Cup could make or break his career, and he is looking to impress.

The Manager

Not much is known about Mexico's manager Miguel Herrera except that he played for his country fourteen times before he hung up his boots for a managerial career. Herrera has spent his entire career playing or managing in the Mexican leagues and he won Mexico's Premier Division last year when he was in charge of CF América. Herrera is a very good judge of players and works well with younger talent. He is a believer in zonal marking and attacking play, while it is believed that he could utilise a 3-5-2 formation this tournament. This is his chance to put his name on the radar, he wants to succeed.

Prediction

Mexico have a very strong attacking force and if football matches were decided by just attacking talent, Mexico would be one of the best in the world. However, football requires defensive talent too and Mexico is very weak in that area. In a group which features Brazil, Croatia and Cameroon, Mexico's fragile defence will be exposed time and time again by the elite players which oppose them.

My conclusion is that I do not think Mexico will reach the knock-out rounds. I believe that Brazil and Croatia possess much stronger teams and they will progress without much challenge. Mexico's defence would need to be on top-song to avoid an early departure from the tournament but considering they face the likes of Brazil's Neymar, Oscar and Hulk and Croatia's Modric, Rakitic and Mandzukic, I don't have much hope for Mexico. They won't give up without a fight but they are not made of the same elite qualities that Brazil and Croatia are.

Brazilian Flair

0

Below is a quick description of the "Brazilian Flair" tactic. The above video breaks it down in more detail. All player instructions and set pieces are also detailed in the video.

Want your team to play a more express brand of football? well this 4-2-3-1 formation really gives the players licence to attack at all opportunities. The AML/AMR are set to sit narrow which creates a very attacking 3 behind the main striker. DL/DR are instructed to get forward and provide width on the outside.

The box-to-box central midfielder is there to disrupt the play and get around the pitch effectively.

Outside of the AMC the two most important players in this tactic are the AML/AMR, both are told to cut inside and shot regularly. Players such as Neymar and Hulk are perfect for this system but any inside forward type player who is playing on the "wrong" side will perform well.

The entire point of this tactic is to get your team playing attacking football that produces - GOALS, GOALS, GOALS!

Belgium, The nation with strong individual's. However, as team they are not the best. Belgium never won the World Cup before. This year with Marc Wilmots, Belgium fans can hope for a good result.

Belgium were put in Group H, The easiest group of all. They have to challenge Algeria, Russia and South Korea, None of the teams won the World Cup before, But they have some dangerous players. Korea has Ki Sung-yueng, Son Heung-min and Park Chu-young. Russia has Igor Akinfejev, Aleksandr Kerzjakov, Sergej Ignasjevitsj And Algeria has Sofiane Feghouli, El Arbi Hillel Soudani, Madjid Bougherra. It won't be easy to win but with the squad Belgium have is it possible.

World Cup History

The history Belgium have in the World Cup is very small. With their only result being fourth in 1986, however they Won the Olympics in 1920.

Key Players

Belgium, like all teams have those 'stand-out' players.Argentina have Messi, Brazil have Neymar. Belgium have none other than Eden Hazard, who doesn't have experience but that doesn't matter Hazard is a young and talented player. He can determine a match on the age of 22, He's a key player for Chelsea and Belgium.

Belgium also have an experienced defender, Vincent Kompany, who's the captain of a amazing club and a amazing nation. He will add experience and knowledge in the defence and could play a huge part in stopping various threats. He will most likely be the first name on the team sheet as his leadership skills as captain can motivate his team-mates in the most important games.

And finally Belgium's man between the sticks, Thibaut Courtois, he will be a huge factor to how Belgium do in the World Cup. he has a very good spell for Atletico Madrid. Courtois helped Atletico Madrid winning the Liga BBVA and reaching the Champions League final.

Players To Watch

Now every World Cup there are surprises, especially when it comes to younger players being called up, and for Belgium there is no exception. Wilmots has decided to call up a younger player who have had a very good season. Adnan Januzai, a player who really impressed for Man United this season. He became first team quality. Wilmots called him up and hopefully he'll play enough minutes to show just how good he can be.

Wilmots surprised us all when he called Origi up. The young striker will be a decent back-up in the attacking area.

Manager

Belgium are led by a experienced manager, called Marc Wilmots, who didn't get many spells at clubs But he learned a lot when he was assistant manager from Belgium. Wilmots played for Belgium at the world cup in 2002. Wilmots knows his stuff and learned enough to lead Belgium to the World Cup Final.

Unavailable due to injury

Like all nations, Belgium have been struck by the World Cup curse and have some players missing. The most notable absentees being Christian Benteke and Koen Casteels Benteke was Belgium's first choice striker. Him being injured is a little problem for Belgium. Casteels was only 3th choice goalkeeper, his injury isn't a big problem.

Prediction

The media have predicted that Belgium should progress out of their group and possibly get into the quarter finals. The media puts high expectations on Belgium and it's up to the whole team to make sure they don't disappoint their fans.

My opinion is that Belgium can progress out of their group and make it to the quarter finals. I do not expect Belgium to win the competition due to the high quality teams but i expect Belgium to win the competition in 2018 when we have more experienced players.

WC2014 Germany Preview

Germany, a nation which has had countless success in the World Cup and this year they want to take the trophy back home, with some of the worlds best players and a manager who knows his way around the business, could this be the year when Germany finally re-take the World Cup Trophy?

Germany are in Group G, and will be facing Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal, as well as Ghana and The USA, which on paper seems a relatively easy group for the Germans, bar Portugal who could give them a good game, you would expect that they would take six points out of six from both Ghana and The USA due to the gulf in class between those two teams and Germany.

World Cup History

Germany have a very good record in both the World Cup and The European Championship, winning the competition three times making them one of the top national teams in history. Their younger national teams have also had good success in international competitions, winning one under 20 World Cup, two under 19 European Championship's and three under 17 European CHampionship's, which altogether makes for a magnificent record.

Key Players

Germany have some of the best talent on the World currently, with all their positions not really needing any work, they undoubtebly have a squad capable of winning this years World Cup. However a player who could make a huge difference this year is Borussia Dortmund's Marco Reus, who has performed very well in this years Bundesliga and with his talent on Germany's left side, and possibly as a forward, Reus could be the deciding factor on how well Germany do.

In midfield, Germany have a whole host of talent which will give their manager, Joachim Low, many selection headaches. However I think that their main midfielder this World Cup will be none other than Bayern Munich's Bastian Schweinsteiger, who holds some good records for his national team and is an all round midfield beast. Schweinsteiger can not only get assists and defend, he also has a good eye for goal and he will be a commanding force in the centre of the park for Germany.

Germany are also blessed with an insane defence which are usually the best foundations for any World Cup winning side. However Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels will be key at the back for the Germans after a great season in the Bundesliga like his fellow team-mate Marco Reus. Hummels is a solid centre-half and has great ability in the air, making him a threat from set-pieces. Hummels will be a huge asset to the back-four and if he produces some stellar performances, he could be getting his hands on a World Cup trophy.

And finally Germany have one of the best goalkeepers in the World, Manuel Neuer, in net. He is one of the bravest and most confident keepers in this era of the game and keeps a very cool head when it comes to penalty shoot-outs. His shot-stopping ability, along with his height, make him a very good goalkeeper and he could be the man who saves Germany and helps them win the World Cup.

Players to Watch

Joachim Low has decided to name an experienced side but has include some younger players in his final 23. He has decided to call-up the Schalke wonderkid, Julian Draxler, who has had a tremendous season in the Bundesliga and has attracted some huge interest from big European Clubs. He will be a very interesting player to watch if he gets a chance to play and a very good performance in Brazil could lead to even bigger interest in the twenty year old.

Another player who could be very interesting to watch is Andre Schurrle, who transferred from Bayer Leverkusen to Chelsea this season just gone, and for his first season in the Barlcays Premier League, he performed quite well. He possesses good pace and he knows where the goal is, although he may not get a lot of starts due to Marco Reus being in his position, he has a chance to really impress and show the World what he is capable of.

The Manager

Germany have an experienced manager to lead them to the World Cup final, Joachim Low, who has been manager since 2006. His knowledge at international level will give Germany an advantage going into the Group Stage he will know what type of team and formation to go with depending on each game, and with eight years experience he could be the man to bring the World Cup trophy back to Germany.

Prediction

The media have predicted that Germany should be able to win this competition due to the quality of their squad. They have a relatively easy group which they should get out of quickly and depending on who they face running up to the Final, they have a great chance of winning this competition. If their players perform to their best we could see a memorable World Cup Final win for the Germans.

In conclusion, my opinion is that Germany will do very well in Brazil and reach the final. I don't see them winning the competition though as I think they will be matched up against the home nation Brazil and due to the home support, Germany will lose by a single goal, however, depending on who they face in the final, it could be a famous World Cup win for Joachim Low and his German side.

England's World Cup fixtures - Infographic

England are gearing up for what should be a fairly successful World Cup campaign this summer, but will have to get some good results and call on some of their better players in order to do so. It will be tough for them to progress from their group, having been put alongside Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica in Group D.

The Three Lions' trips will take them across Brazil, with each stadium highlighted by leading car hire firm Hertz in their infographic below.

England vs Italy, 14th June – Arena da Amazonia, Manaus - 10PM BST

What a game to kick off their World Cup campaign - England will be plunged right into the action in their first game in Brazil. Roy Hodgson's men must outplay Italy in one of Brazil's most humid areas. Italy may not be used to the climates either, so it could be a great spectacle, or the exact opposite. The two teams will either go all out for a win, or be so taken aback by the humidity that they will run themselves out of steam. Both Hodgson and Cesare Prandelli will have tried to get the players accustomed to the climates, but only time will tell if this has worked. The last time these two sides played competitively, England were sent out of the European Championships (2012) in a penalty shootout.

England vs Uruguay, 19th June – Arena de Sao Paulo - 8PM BST

England may have grown slightly more accustomed to the heat following their first match against Italy, but Uruguay will be a different level of challenge altogether. Not only will they be used to the South American climates, but they also have quality players such as Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani who could put England to the sword even in a different climate. The stadium is home to Corinthians, where star midfielder Nicolás Lodeiro plays his domestic football, so he will really be in his own backyard. The last time the two sides met competitively was the year in which England won the 1966 World Cup - the match between these two sides ended in a 0-0 draw in the group stages.

England vs Costa Rica, 24th June – Estadio Mineirao - 5PM BST

These two sides have never met, but England should be confident of a comfortable victory, with the only real threat of Costa Rica being Arsenal's Joel Campbell, although I cannot see him threatening too often with the quality of the team alongside him. The Costa Rican may well be accustomed to the climates, but this should not matter, and England will be disappointed if they come away with anything less than a win.

What next?

If England are to progress from the groups, they will then go on to face either the winner or runner-up of Group C, depending on the position in which they finish. This means that they will be up against one of Japan, Colombia, Ivory Coast, or Greece.

The Lone Gunman FM14 Tactic

The Lone Gunman 2014

Want a blast from the past? then check out this revamped version of the classic CM01/02 tactic, recreated for Football Manager 2014!

Please note, this tactic has not been tested over an entire season. It has been used in a test environment over a period of games with different clubs. It's an experimental tactic that aims to provide a break from the normal mundane formations.

The entire purpose of building this tactic is to give you the framework to be able to tweak it to suit your players. To spark some nostalgia if you remember this tactic that is well over a decade old. If you can't even remember CM01/02 then maybe you just want a new tactic that is completely different to 90% of tactics out there?

As a rough guide you are going to need a top class striker or "lonegunman" but also have lots of attacking midfield options. Another important thing to mention is your 2 wide players, in this tactic both ML/MR, they are set up as defensive wingers so you need to make sure you have players who are adequate in those positions. Quite rare in Football Manager 2014.

This might be stating the obviously but if you don't have 2 good CBs then this formation will not work out as well as you'd hope.

Chelsea, Juventus and Manchester City would be good starting teams with this tactic until you feel confident with what is possible. All have good CBs, a top striker (when Lukaku returns from loan) and players who can play the defensive winger role (sometimes wingbacks retrained to ML/MR).

All team instructions and player instructions are shown in the above video and included in the download.

If you enjoy this tactic then please consider watching the above video and subscribing to my channel.

Brazil is, effectively, seen by many as the spiritual home of football. Flamboyancy, improvisation, skill and technique - all words associated with the Brazilian way of playing. The nation is seen as one of the finest hotbeds for young talent in the world, with a track record second to none when it comes to producing the next big thing.

As hosts, Brazil have been put into Group A, where they will face off against Croatia, Mexico and Cameroon. This can be seen as a very kind draw to the hosts, and one which they will look to take advantage of. Mexico and Croatia seem the most threatening, but Brazil's natural ability will most likely get them over the line.

World Cup History

Brazil are the most successful nation in World Cup History. 1958, 1962, 1970, 1990 and 2002 are the years in which Brazil has risen above the rest of the world. In this time players such as Pelé, Garrincha, Zagallo, Ronaldo, Romario. The latest in those line of players will be Neymar, who will have the weight of a nation's expectations on his shoulders.

Star Players

This is one of the least star-studded Brazil squads of all time. There is no Ronaldo, Romario or a Kaká or Ronaldinho. Neymar is the star attraction this time round. After bursting on to the scene with boyhood club Santos, Neymar finally made his long-awaited move to Europe - joining Barcelona. There he has played well, but he is a rare case of a player who plays better in his national team shirt than his club one.

Another pivotal player for Brazil is Oscar. After two outstanding seasons at London outfit Chelsea, Oscar has firmly cemented his place as one of Luiz Felipe Scolari's key men. His wide range of passing, creativity and finishing place him as one of the hottest prospects in the world.

Thiago Silva is the final key player. Despite their being many more, Thiago is the most important. Rated as one of the best defenders on the earth, the PSG captain also leads his national team. His rock solid defending and partnership with David Luiz could be a catalyst for success on home soil.

Ones To Watch

Brazil is a country that contains a plethora of footballing talent and consistently churns them out year after year. Who are the hot prospects that will be representing their country in two weeks time?

Despite this, the Brazil squad manager Luiz Felipe Scolari has brought to the World Cup is a relatively experienced one on the international stage. Bernard, the 21-year old who was linked with Arsenal in previous transfer windows, is the largest prospect there. The small winger is highly regarded at Shakhtar Donetsk and could be

The Manager

Luiz Felipe Scolari, sometimes known as Felipão, is considered as a master of tournaments. Scolari has built a squad that is unified and has one goal: to win. His team know what they need to do, and Scolari knows what he needs to do. This isn't the first time Scolari has managed his home nation. Last time he was the Selecão's manager, he led them to World Cup glory in 2002 - in similar circumstances.

Legends

Brazil is a country gifted with footballing ability. Years upon years of stars have come through the ranks of their hometown clubs before going on to make it into the big time. Pelé is the biggest name that springs to mind. With 77 goals in 92 caps, he is often referred to as the greatest of all time.

Garrincha is a legend of way back for his performances in '58 and '62 and his mazy dribbling skills and trickery. More legends of recent times are Ronaldo, a goal scoring machine who played for the likes of Barcelona. Romario will always be remembered for his goal scoring and poaching - as well as some off the field controversy, too, however. Ronaldinho is a modern day legend and will always be remembered by Brazilian fans. The big grin of the ex-Milan winger is still iconic as ever.

Predictions

The media have always placed the onus on this Brazil side to come out winners, and ever since their comprehensive win over Spain in the final of the Confederations Cup final the pressure has begun growing intensely.

In my opinion, I believe Brazil can triumph on home soil. Scolari has united this squad and has gotten them prepared correctly and made sure they can use their home court advantage well. It is a young squad, but if they keep solid at the back and don't let the heavy expectations and pressure get to them, I can see them winning the competition for a record 6th time.

WC2014 Spain Preview

$

Spain, one of the most decorated national teams in recent years. They are also host to the La Liga BBVA, featuring two of the most renowned clubs in world football. Barcelona and Real Madrid. As Spain achieved success in recent years they have also received many plaudits for their fantastic passing style of play. But, with the ageing of some of their players and the emergence of other nation’s players, it remains to be seen whether Spain can retain the World Cup trophy in the upcoming tournament in Brazil this summer.

Spain have been drawn in Group B alongside Holland, Chile and Australia, with the group being labelled this year’s competitions’ ‘Group of Death’. It most definitely is a tough group but with the caliber of players Spain feature and their recent tournament history they will of course be expected to progress much further than the group stage and potentially even win the tournament.

World Cup History

Although Spain have only ever managed to win one World Cup in their history, in 2010, their national side has gone down in the history books recently after winning three consecutive competitions, UEFA European Championships 2008, FIFA World Cup 2010 and UEFA European Championships 2012, becoming the first ever team to achieve this. Thus, they have been hailed as one of the greatest ever teams in world football, and the current holders of the World Cup will be looking to prove this again in Brazil.

Key Players

One player who is a key component of the Spanish side is central defender Sergio Ramos. The 27 year old plays his club football for Real Madrid, and his fantastic defensive attributes such as tackling and heading make him the perfect player to cut off any opposition attacks. Combine him with his defensive partner Pique, another class player and you have the backbone to a top national side, most definitely capable of winning a World Cup.

Andres Iniesta, the goalscorer of the winning goal in the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final against Holland. He is the midfield maestro of the Spanish side and will need to show his quality again in the upcoming competition. The Barcelona man’s incredible passing, creativity, dribbling amongst his other top qualities make him one of the best midfielders in the world and an instrumental figure of this Spanish team. Many fans will be expecting more magic to be produced in Brazil by Iniesta.

With Spain lacking in a prolific goalscorer since the ageing of David Villa and the decline in form of Fernando Torres, powerful striker Diego Costa will be heavily relied on during this World Cup to score the goals needed for the team. Costa was born in Brazil however he was eligible to play for Spain and has been picked after an incredible campaign for his club Atletico Madrid, helping them to win the La Liga title. His finishing is top notch and given the opportunity he will most likely score. It will be interesting to see how Costa adapts to playing as part of the Spain team, but many are expecting him to do well and he will definitely be a key player for the defending champions.

Players to Watch

There are many class players within the Spain squad, and it is hard to knock these experienced internationals off their place but one example of someone who has done just that is Cesar Azpilicueta. He is traditionally a right back however he impressed hugely over the course of the season for Chelsea, playing as a left back taking Ashley Cole’s spot at Stamford Bridge. If Azpilicueta can carry over his club form to his country, he will certainly be one to watch during this World Cup with his all action displays and high work rate a common theme in his play.

Another player who will be one to watch in Brazil this summer is Atletico Madrid’s midfield talent Koke. He is only 21 years old but had a very good season at club level leading to his call up to the national team. Koke was so good that his inclusion meant that Real Madrid’s Isco was left out of the squad in his place, proving that he has great ability to make a difference if given the chance in the World Cup.

The Manager

Leading the Spain national team is 62 year old Vicente Del Bosque. Del Bosque is very experienced and has already won the World Cup and European Championship while in charge of Spain. Not only that but he had a highly successful spell as manager of Real Madrid winning La Liga twice, the Champions League twice amongst other titles. He is a very knowledgeable boss and has already proven that he has the capabilities to help Spain win the World Cup.

Unavailable due to injury

Most teams will always have players ruled out of the World Cup due to injuries. Fortunately for Spain, the only notable absentee is Victor Valdes. However, with Iker Casillas ahead of him anyway he is not much of a miss with Pepe Reina and David De Gea other goalkeepers in the squad who can fill his spot. With injuries not a problem for Spain, their World Cup hopes haven’t been hampered badly and they have a much better chance of glory.

Prediction

The media has Spain odds on to lift the World Cup, as they are of course holders of the competition, have won their last three international competitions, and have an incredible strong squad and manager. There will be high expectation on the players representing Spain and anything less than achieving a place in the final will most likely prove to be disappointing for the Spanish media and especially the fans.

In my opinion, I think that Spain will as always highly entertain many fans with their performances in Brazil however personally I think that their ‘era of dominance’ on the international stage may be coming to an end with players ageing and the emergence of stars from the likes of Brazil and Belgium. Despite all this, I believe Spain will progress from the ‘Group of Death’ and eventually go on to the finals but will ultimately lose out.

WC2014 Colombia Preview

$
0
0
They've been called the next golden generation, but will they live up to their name in Brazil without their star player? Will someone else take place alongside legends like Escobar and Valderrama in history? The questions are many, expectations are high and answers are about to come.

Los Cafeteros has been placed in Group C along with Ivoy Coast, Japan and Greece. This means they will face the likes of Drogba and Honda in what can be viewed as a group of moderate competitiveness. None of the teams have enjoyed great success in the WC, however Greece did pull off one of the greatest upsets in football history as they won the European Championship 2004.

World Cup History

Despite the golden generation spearheaded by Carlos Valderrama in the 90s, Colombia have never reached the final 8 of the WC. Instead one could argue that their most famous moment in football took place outside the arenas as Andres Escobar was tragically killed after scoring an incesive own goal in the 1994 WC. Colombia will hope to create new memories ON the pitch this summer.

Key Players

With superstar Falcao out injured during the entire tournament, Jackson Martinez may very well prove to be Colombia's key to success in Brazil. The ever lethal striker has a couple of fantastic seasons behind him in Porto and has been rumoured to numerous top clubs around Europe the last couple of transfer windows. Though he hasn't started many games during the qualification phase, Martinez has still managed to grab 3 goals in 3 starts on the way to Brazil. If the team is going to succeed, Martinez will have to produce.

The Colombian midfield is an offensive force to be reckoned with. In a wealth of talent, the one that perhaps sticks out the most is Martinez former teammate James Rodriguez. Touted as the next Valderrama, Rodriguez swift movement with the ball and ability to create chances caught the eyes of ambitious side Monaco who signed him last summer. During his first year in Ligue 1 Rodriguez registered 9 goals and a league high 12 assists.

In what has been a surprisingly sturdy defence, the seasoned team captain Mario Yepes will be crucial with his routine to the fairly inexperienced side. As a part of the 2001 Copa America Champions side, Yepes is the last playing son of the golden generation. Though he may be lacking in individual quality, Yepes has led his fellow defenders in great fashion as Colombia was the lowest conceeding team in the South American Qualifers, with only 13 balls finding the back of the net in 16 games. If Colombia are to make a mark in this years tournament, Yepes and his defence will have to play at least as good as in the qualifiers.

Player to Watch

For all of us FM-lovers one player will be of particular interest - Eder Alvarez Balanta. In FM14 he evolves to an absolute beast, one of the best players in the game. In real life he's been called the best defender in South America and played a big part as River Plate completed the comeback from relegation and won the Argentine top flight. I'm a bit ashamed to admit I've never seen him play, but with the amount of praise he has received we might witness a revelation if he's given the chance to play.

The Manager

Jose Pekerman is the first foreign Los Cafeteros manager in over 30 years. After being appointed early in the qualification campaign, the Argentine led the team to an impressive second place in the group with only his native giants finishing ahead. In case you weren't sick of his mentioning already, Valderrama said that Pekerman 'has given Colombian football its identity back - a sense of adventure, fun and source of national pride'. Pekermans biggest accomplishments in football thus far are three U20WC championships and a quarter-final loss in the 2006 WC, all with Argentina.

Unavailable due to Injury

The absence of the teams biggest star Falcao is a huge blow to Los Cafeteros. The Monaco striker lost his race against the clock trying to come back from a knee-injury and the whole world of football mourns with him and his countrymen, he could have been a main attraction in the tournament. Falcao is however not the only Colombian nation to miss the WC: Aquivaldo Mosquera, Luis Perea, Macnelly Torres, Edwin Valencia, Elkin Soto and Luis Muriel will all be out of action this summer.

Prediction

According to the media Colombia should progress on from the group stage. From there on they will not be favourites in any games as one out of Uruguay, Italy or England probably will be waiting in the knockout stages. They are on the other hand considered somewhat of a dark horse and though not being favourites, no one would be shocked if Colombia should beat one of the above mentioned.

What do I think? Just like the media I believe that Los Cafeteros should progress from the group stage with relative ease, even though Japan and Ivory Coast will both put up fights. If Martinez also finds the net while Yepes can regain in the back, I don't see why this team shouldn't go on and challenge for a place in the top 8 or maybe even top 4. Who knows, maybe people will refer to the legend Rodriguez every other second when writing about Los Cafeteros in the future, all because that new golden generation and their conquests in Brazil 2014...
